I slide a plate sporting a salami and cheese sandwich across the table to Max. âHere you go, champ. Just like you asked.â With the shades pulled down, the restaurant sits in shadows.
âDoes it got mustard?â
âYes. It has mustard.â Depositing my own plate on the table, I sit.
He lifts the sourdough bread and peers beneath. âYou didnât put mayo on it, did you?â
I freeze, my own sandwich halfway to my mouth. âDid you ask for mayo?â
He shakes his head.
âGood. Thereâs no mayo.â Before he can sidetrack me with another question, I take a bite. Pure, artery-clogging bliss.
Max wraps his hands around his sandwich, opens his mouth as wide as possible, and almost gets a full bite. The words he utters are unintelligible.
âDonât talk with your mouth full.â
He nods, his cheeks puffing out with the effort it takes to chew.
I wasnât exactly thrilled when Julia showed up with him this morning. No reflection on Maxâor Julia, for that matter. Just not used to being around kids.
If things had been differentâif I had been differentâmight be Iâd have a kid or two of my own by now. But as my grandmother used to say, âIf wishes were horsesâ¦â
Katie steps into the dining room. âHey, guys.â
I make a point of checking my watch. âYour shift doesnât start for hours.â
âI thought Iâd come in early and see if I can give Maris a hand. Sheâs trying out a new special tonight.â
âComing into work early? On a Saturday? No social life, huh?â
âNot since you and Tess went all parental on me.â
Iâm not about to touch that one. âI donât think Maris is here yet.â
Katie shrugs. âMind if I sit?â She drops into the chair before I can answer.
âNot at all. Have a seat.â
âHey, Max.â She ruffles his hair. âWhatâre you doing here?â
Swallowing, Max readjusts the top piece of bread. âMy momâs workinâ in the office.â
âYouâre stuck here all day? That sounds boring.â
âAunt Tessâs picking me up.â
âWhatâre you going to do?â
He shrugs and shoves another bite into his mouth.
I glance toward my office, obscured by the swinging door. âThought sheâd be here by now.â
âShe might be. The door to your office was closed, and I heard talking in there. Sheâs probably hanging out with Julia.â
âItâs not like I donât have work of my own to do.â I sound like an old grouch.
Katie folds her elbows on the table and stares at me.
âWhat?â I shift in my chair and focus on Max. âYou about done, champ? We can go check and see if Tess is here.â
âNot yet.â He picks at a piece of cheese hanging off the edge of the bread.
Katie catches my eye. âWhereâd you come from?â
âYour dad never had the birds and the bees talk with you, huh?â
âFunny. I mean what did you do before Dad hired you?â
âThis and that.â I wave a hand at Max. âYou intend to eat that thing or what?â
âTess says no one knows anything about you. She says you appeared out of nowhere.â
âWhat? Like I fell out of the sky or something? Maybe Iâm an alien?â I scowl.
